Student Enrollment

Students must live within NKSD boundaries to enroll in their home school. If your child lives outside the district, you will need to complete a Non-Resident Waiver as part of the enrollment form.

NKSD Attendance boundaries

Have the following ready to upload as a photo or scanned copy. You can also bring paper copies to your school. Enrollment is not complete until all documents are received.

Required:

• Proof of age and name: birth certificate, passport, adoption record, previous school record, or other document permitted by law. To order a Washington State birth certificate, visit the WA Dept. of Health or call 360-236-4313.
• Proof of residence: signed lease agreement or a utility bill dated within the last 30 days (electricity, water, gas, sewer, trash, internet, or cable/satellite). If utilities are included in rent, a rental agreement on property management letterhead is accepted. Contact your school office if documents are unavailable.
• Medically verified Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS): must be signed by a healthcare provider. See the Health Services page for immunization requirements.

If applicable:

• Custody or court order
• Restraining order
• Prior school records

Recommended:

• Two emergency contacts with addresses and phone numbers

Additional Forms:

• Title VI Eligibility Form determines a student's eligibility for specific programs and services provided under Title VII, which is aimed at assisting students who belong to federally recognized tribes, bands, or other organized groups, including Alaska Natives or descendants of such members.

• Under the guidelines of Federal Law 99.31 of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), written consent from parents or guardians isn't usually required to release records. However, if a Special Services Assessment is being requested, a parent or guardian's signature is still necessary on the Records Request form. To complete the form, parents or guardians must provide the name, address, and phone number of the previous school. This can either be uploaded into the application or provided through other designated means.

Note: Families eligible for the McKinney-Vento program are not required to provide documents as a condition of enrollment.

If your child has a life-threatening condition such as allergies, asthma, diabetes, or seizure disorders, please meet with the school nurse before the first day of school.

Enrollment is completed through Skyward Family Access.

• New to NKSD or returning after a break? Create a new Skyward Family Access account. You will receive a confirmation email with your login. Note: if you previously had a Skyward account, it was removed when your child left or graduated. You will need to create a new one.
• Already have a Skyward account? Log in and select "New Student Online Enrollment" from the left menu.

The form has six sections:

1. Student information (name, date of birth, language, school history)
2. Family and guardian information (address, contact details, relationship to student). Note: each guardian must have a unique email address.
3. Emergency contacts (people other than guardians who can pick up your student)
4. Immunization information. You can get records from your child's doctor or print them using MyIR. To request an exemption, submit a Certificate of Exemption.
5. Document uploads (proof of age, proof of residence, immunization records, and any additional forms)
6. District forms (immunization notification, attendance policy, health emergency authorization, and others)

Skyward Family Access

Once all sections are complete and documents are attached, click "Submit Application to the District." Processing takes up to 2 to 3 weeks for new school year applications. You will receive a confirmation email when your application is approved.

In accordance with WAC-246-105-030, Washington State requires all students to have a medically verified Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) or Certificate of Exemption on file before starting school.

Accepted records:

• A CIS signed by a healthcare provider
• Records printed from MyIR

To request an exemption: Submit a Certificate of Exemption.

Immunization requirements by grade are available on the WA Dept. of Health website.

Students may not attend school until immunization records or a valid exemption are on file. Students eligible for McKinney-Vento are not required to provide health documents at the time of enrollment but must provide them within 30 days.

To enroll in kindergarten, a child must turn five by August 31. Acceptable age verification documents include a state-issued birth certificate, hospital certificate of live birth, passport, adoption records, or a parent's affidavit. Visit the Kindergarten Enrollment page for more details.

Grade level is based on a student's age, previous school records, and any available test results. Verification of prior schooling may be required during enrollment.

You can apply for free or reduced-price meals during enrollment or at any time through Skyward Family Access or the Food and Nutrition Services page.

Bus service is provided for students attending their home school. To find your child's bus stop and route, visit the Transportation Department page or call (360) 396-3099.

Students are assigned to their home school based on where they live. If you would like your child to attend a different school within the district, you can request a transfer. Transfers are approved on a yearly basis and must be renewed each year. For full details on eligibility, the request process, and current school availability, visit the Transfer Requests page.

Your email may still be linked to a previous account. Use a different email address or contact the Student Records office at 360-396-3098 to have it removed.

Enrollment for the new school year opens in February. If you move into the district during the school year, you can enroll your child at that time.

Log back into the enrollment portal to check your status. For help, contact the Student Information department.

Complete the enrollment process separately for each child.

Yes, this is normal. The system assigns a grade based on your child's birth date and will update automatically once enrollment for the upcoming school year is complete.

Students attend their home school based on where they live. Visit the Attendance Boundaries page or call the Transportation Department at (360) 396-3099 with your home address.

If you are an existing NKSD family, your information is pulled from your current account and can only be updated by your school's registrar. Contact the school where your child is enrolled to make corrections. Changes will apply to all of your children's records.

Processing takes up to 2 to 3 weeks. You will receive an email when your application is approved.
