Course Description: This course prepares individuals to understand children’s physical, mental, emotional, and social development, as well as their care and guidance. The program draws on aspects of the social and biological sciences of which “Family and Consumer Science Education” is a component. This class is designed to meet licensing requirements for early learning through STARS 30 hour basic course. Students desiring an opportunity for observation and actual experiences with children are encouraged to register for practicum experience (please talk to Ms. Ahrens).

Student Leadership: FCCLA (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America) activities will be integrated into classroom and will meet during tutorial time as a NKHS sponsored club.

Tech Prep Credit: College Tech Prep Program - This course is College Tech Prep approved and articulated with Olympic College. Students, who demonstrate a proficiency of the college course competencies with a “B” (3.0) or better grade, earn college credits through the SERS Tech Prep registration process. Your teacher can assist you in the online registration process at http://sers.techprepwa.org/.

Grading: All assignments and activities are graded according to the point system. Your grades will be based on the following standard:

A 100 – 94% C+ 79 – 77% F 59% and below
A- 93 – 90% C 76 – 74%
B+ 89 – 87% C- 73 – 70%
B 86 – 84% D+ 69 – 67%
B- 83 – 80% D 66 – 60%

Make-up policy: All work is due as the teacher assigns. Work assigned in a month is due during that month and must be submitted by the end of the month assigned to receive credit. Additionally, after an absence, students MUST come in before school, after school or during tutorial to get their missing work.
Attendance: Much of our work is based on working together so your attendance is important. Please see student handbook for details.

Hall passes: I reserve the right to restrict use if I see it being abused. Hall passes are for restroom trips only. Please plan accordingly.

Classroom Climate of RESPECT: Teacher, students, classroom.

Cell Phones: Must be turned off and out of sight during class. Following school policy cell phones will be removed from student and made available after school in Main Office.

Language: please use positive language in classroom at all times. Profanity will not be tolerated.
