Dear Viking Families,

Thank you for a great 2018-2019 school year.  From academics to athletics and activities, NKHS students excelled this past year.  We were thrilled to see an increase in family and community participation on campus this past year.  A huge thank you to the PTSA, Booster Clubs, and Spirit Committee for your continued support of our students.

Looking forward to next year, I want to share some dates and new information:

  1.  The school will be closed from July 1st  through August 16th.  The office will re-open on August 19th
  2. Viking Rush will take place on August 22nd  from 8:00-3:30.  The Viking Rush schedule will be sent out in early August.
  3. The first day of school is September 4th.  We are planning to start with a Freshman/New Student Orientation; 10th-12th grade students will be on a delayed start this morning.  We will send the bell schedule out for the first week at the start of August.

A major change that will be coming in the 2019-2020 school year is in regard to our school bell schedule.  Last January the district announced that we would be moving to a new, shared schedule at both KHS and NKHS.  This new schedule, which is attached to this email, has some distinct changes from our current system:

  • Monday, Thursday, and Friday will remain our standard 6-period day.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday will be a block, 3-period, schedule.
  • There will be three study session opportunities—two 40-minute study sessions on Tuesday and one 40-minute study session on Wednesday.

Staff will be spending time this summer learning instructional and engagement strategies for teaching a block schedule.  We have a Study Session Committee who has been hard at work putting together a plan for next year’s augmented time in Study Sessions.  The Committee met with staff, students, and parents to gather input and ideas.  We then looked for trends and common interests/needs.  Attached to this email is an overview of the Study Session plan we have put together based on this input and information.  I will be hosting a Parent and Student Meeting to discuss ideas about this new plan on August 19th at 4:00PM in the NKHS Library for anyone who would like to join us.

We have had a number of staff members leave us this year and have been working hard to bring on the very best staff to replace them.  We have filled most, but not all, of our positions for the new year and I want to introduce and welcome the following staff members to NKHS for the 2019-2020 school year:

  • Ms. Shelley West will be coming over from Kingston High School to round out our Spanish program this year.  Ms. West has been a Spanish teacher in the North Kitsap School District for many years, teaching at all levels, and is excited to share her expertise with the students at North Kitsap High School.  We are so excited to welcome her to NKHS next year.
  • Mr. Kevin Eyer has taught virtually every level of secondary Science and is excited to move over from Kingston Middle School and get back into high school sciences.  He will be working primarily with our Physical Science program and has already been a tremendous asset.
  • Ms. Valeri Powers is joining us from Poulsbo Middle School to teach Math.  As soon as we met her, we knew we had a special person joining us—Ms. Powers brings with her a tremendous understanding of how to best support math students, and she is going to be a positive addition to our teaching staff.
  • Mr. Ryan Syler will also be coming over from Poulsbo Middle School, not to teach Math, but to teach English, including our AP Literature course.  Mr. Syler has an immense background in Language and Literature and is excited to jump into this new venture.  We are excited for him to be joining our staff here at NKHS.
  • We are excited to share that Ms. Connie Mayer will be returning to us from Florida to teach in our Special Education Resource program.  Ms. Mayer was a beloved teacher here at NKHS for many years, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her returning to us.
  • Ms. Janelle Clellan will also be joining the Special Education Resource program next year.  We were so excited when Ms. Clellan came to interview, and even more excited when she accepted the position here at NKHS.  She comes with incredible experience and background and is sure to be a fantastic addition to the NKHS staff.
  • Mr. Jared Prince has stepped in as our new ASB advisor for the upcoming school year.  Mr. Stanford plans to continue to work with Athletics but chose to step away from ASB.  Mr. Prince has already started with a bang, meeting with the students and laying out some new ideas and next steps.  We know that he is going to be tremendous in this new role.
  • We are in the midst of filling our final two position for the summer:  CTE Business/Marketing Teacher and Assistant Principal.  I know that we will find great candidates and will share more about them once those positions have been finalized.

Please enjoy a wonderful, relaxing summer.  We look forward to seeing you all in August.
