Update from Principal Sawicki on 8/21:

NKHS Community Overview Information on 8/21/2020

Dear Viking Families,

I know you have been long waiting for more concrete information about how the school year will be starting.  I will be sending out ongoing communication providing overview for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year at NKHS.  I want to thank you for your graciousness and understanding as we have worked to put this together.  I know it has been unnerving not knowing what to expect.  I most likely won’t have all the answers ready for you today, but I will be able to start unpacking the big picture.

We are starting the year in distance learning, in the hopes that we will be able to open in our hybrid model when it is safe to do so.  To this end, staff have been working diligently to learn the ins and outs of a distance learning model.  We will be utilizing common technology platforms (In our case, this will be through our Microsoft tools) and communication through our Microsoft suite and will spend the first few days of school orienting students to these tools and communication systems.  You may hear us call them The Core 4.  If you would like to learn more about the tools your student will be working with this year, we have published a Family Guide to E-Learning:  http://nkschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=419589&pageId=24236469.

We will start the year in a slightly different fashion than normal.  We have moved our conference days to the beginning of the school year to better serve families and students as we prepare for a unique start to the year.  On Monday we will publish the schedule and overview for these days.  Please know that we will start on September 2nd with personal outreach from your student’s Viking Strong teacher (this is a new “advisory” session that we are implementing in order to better support student needs and connect with students), a Freshman and New Student Orientation, and a virtual Open House event.  On September 3rd, your student will have a Zoom meeting with his or her Viking Strong teacher to orient them to their new learning tools, help them learn and understand the school schedule, and prepare them for success in distance learning.  We will start our first academic classes on September 4th

On Monday, we will also publish the student weekly learning schedule.  This was sent out in the larger Return to Learn document, so you may have already seen it.  If not, here is a link for you to view it:  http://nkschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=419589&pageId=24051737.   We have worked hard to put together a schedule that will allow students to access a rigorous high school program from home.  Please note that students will be taking three, compressed courses per semester, rather than our standard six.  They will still complete six full credits for the year, but will finish out 1st-3rd period in first semester and 4th-6th period in second semester.  Student class schedules are still being built.  When student class schedules have been finalized, we will send out notification and you can view them in Skyward.

The staff at NKHS is so excited to welcome students back to school.  While I know it will be different than we are used to, we are working hard to provide the same quality program that you are used to seeing.  GO NK!

Sincerely,

Megan Sawicki
