Assignment to be working on:
Patrick Henry Speech and Questions.doc
10 most common fallacies.doc
Syllogism.docx

May 3rd
Hey Everyone,
Here we are in May already. I have a new assignment for you to work on this week. If you have not submitted the Walter Mitty assignment to Turnitin, then please work on that first.
The new assignment is a rhetorical analysis of a famous speech. I have also provided the following:
a review or introduction to the idea of syllogism - the foundation for logic.
some definitions of terms that may be helpful
and a list of the 10 most common fallacies as a reminder.
Oh yeah, and the speech and questions.
Here they are - Syllogism.docx   10 most common fallacies.doc
   Patrick Henry Speech and Questions.doc
And here are the terms I want you to remember:

Ethos is a person’s credibility in the eyes of their audience – it is not necessarily ethics.

Logos is logic – facts, figures, stats, syllogism

Pathos – is the appeal to emotions – most commercials appeal to our fears and insecurities.

Allusion- a reference to a commonly known text or shared experience – the bible and mythology are the most common-Shakespeare as well.

Remember to bring your questions to Zoom tomorrow. I emailed you the Zoom invite yesterday. Here is the info here as well:

April 23rd
Hey 10th graders,
I am a day behind with posting your next assignment.
You will read a very short story, a classic at that.
You will write a short journal response and answer a few questions about vocab.
You will analyze cause and effect, do a prewrite, imitating the cause and effect scenario and then write a short creative piece emulating the author's style.
Easy peasy.

Here it is:
_1 Intro journal and vocab.docx
_2 Walter Mitty Graphic Organizer.docx
_3 Writing Outline and prompt.docx

I heard from many of you over Spring Break. SO happy to hear from you!
Well, today kicks off the official distance learning we've been hearing so much about.
First I want to give you my schedule. It looks like this:
All ELA teachers are available from 9-12 for online interactions with students.
From 1-3 everyday are my office hours where you can email me for immediate-ish responses and the like.

I'm not sure what you will want from me but let's figure it out together. I can host Teams or Zoom if that is your need or just post assignments and due dates. We'll figure it all out - don't you worry.

If you have not turned in the Law Day essay, please get those to me, here is the information that you will need:
Period 2 10th: Period 4 10th
Class ID:  24307253 Class ID:  24307268
Enrollment Key:  Dunbar Enrollment Key:  Dunbar

Once you revise the essay, turn it in to the revision assignment.

For those students who have written and revised the essay, please submit to the contest. The instructions are in the March 31 post. Please scroll down to find them.

In the meantime, finish reading 1984.  I will post a journal prompt Wednesday connected to the novel.
Then on Monday, I will post the test for 1984 in the form of a Kahoot. I will activate it at 1:30 pm. If you can't make it don't worry. There will be more than one chance to play. Then we are moving on from the novel into new territory.
I miss all of you so much! Remember, 9-12 tomorrow I'm online.
More to come.

March 31 Tuesday - if you need the Turnitin info, scroll down on this page to the March 20th update.

Hello. I don't know about you guys but we had a rain/snow mix yesterday - and tomorrow is April 1! Springtime in the PNW I guess :)
So I gave you the instruction sheet to view your essays on Turnitin and it apparently doesn't take you to the corrections and comments. By now, if you have turned in your essay, then I have emailed it you with corrections and a comments.
Now I would like you to revise your essay and submit it to the revisions assignment on turnitin. Once you have done that, then you can submit it to the contest.
Remember the rules of submission are:

If submitted by email, the body of the email must include the author’s name, phone number, email address, school, grade and teacher assigning the essay (if applicable). The essay must be inserted as an attachment to the email. If submitted by snail mail, the same information must be included on a separate cover sheet. Do not include any identifying information on the essay itself. Send essays to:
The Law Office of Thomas E. Weaver
PO Box 1056

Please take care of yourselves and hopefully you aren't too bored.
Keep in touch.

March 26th Thursday
Hi everyone. I have been trying to figure out how to make it so you can access your scores on Turnitin.com.
I found an instruction sheet for this from Turnitin. Here it is:
TurnitinStudentGuide-HowDoIViewMyGradeInTurnitin.pdf

Don't be afraid - it says 5 pages (yow) but they wrote in really big font so no worries.
Once you revise your essay - then please resubmit on Turnitin.com. I have created a revision assignment with different due dates. This is also for a score.
Let me know if you have any questions or can't see your graded essay - otherwise there you go!
