Powers, Valeri

Welcome to my website!

People always ask young children, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" My answer was always, "A teacher!" To accomplish my goal, I earned a Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics from San Diego State University and a Masters in Teaching Mathematics (grades 5-12) from Western Governors University.

In addition to all things math (pardon the pun), I love puzzles, dogs, elephants, and adventuring in nature. I was born and raised in San Diego, California, but I have found my home here in Washington. I have lived here for about four years with my husband, my twelve year old son, and my six year old daughter. I also have a cat, two dogs, and two guinea pigs.

My hope is that my passion for mathematics education will inspire my students to see math as an interesting and exciting human endeavor. I tell my students often that learning math is not about acquiring facts and knowledge, it's about strengthening skills. It takes practice, perseverance, and a belief that we can improve and achieve success.
